CD REVIEWS

DIOSDEIRA - Reincarnatorium = Review by Al Lunatic :

As bands continue on the rise from our neighboring country, Mexico, the genre of their music keeps on broadening. Hailing from the infamous murder capital of all border violence, comes "Diosderia"; of Ciudad Juarez, CH, MX. Ernesto, from the band was kind enough to send it my way via international mail and as soon as I recieved it , it went straight into my car radio to listen to during my drive to work.
At first listen, the music seemed so familar, that I had to think twice if I had heard of these guys before. Now before I forget to mention; these guys make the most of their presentation by packaging the cd in an 8 panel, professional looking cd. This saids alot about what the band thinks about their music since they come from a country that has far less oportunities then ours.
Now getting back to that familar sound: these guys incorperate all the tricks of the trade by all the more known national acts;(our Thrash/Death metal forefathers.) While the vocals remain in a lower gutteral range, the music takes us from, Slayer, to Death, to Destruction, and back to classic Metallica sounds. With the lyrics dealing mainly with death, and anti-christian topics; the band does touch basis on some political issues. My favorite track by far is "World of Demise", with the guitars crunching out some pretty cool sounding triplets over an evil sounding acoustic guitar. In this modern world of metal taking different directions, these guys are a warm welcomed example of a band busting out well executed thrash/death metal that sticks to it roots. Perhaps, if the band continues on this road, the band will mold the highlights of these sounds into a more original sound of their own. Nonetheless, I highly recommend it to all the old thrashers out there since their music pulls out all the stops that we love and grew up listening to.

SEVERANCE - Suffering In Humanity = Review by Al Lunatic :

To our local South Texas natives that follow the local metal scene; its no secret where the band Severance has been manifesting; But to the rest of the world that was captivated by their 2001 worldwide release cd " Salvation Denied", under Repulse/ BlackEnd /WWIII Records, it has been a very, very long wait. I mean, the word hasn't really gotten around yet that Severance is part of the RGV Underground which they call their home. So in essense, they may have viewed Severance as in and out of the limelight. With the release of their new cd titled, "Suffering In Humanity", Severance has stayed true to the same brutality and aggression that stapled them as one the best damn death metal bands the State of Texas has to offer.

This is a collection of 12, head pounding, scrotum draggin, gut wrenching, titty twisting, shit stomping, tongue biting, soul scraping, teeth grinding, bone crushing, songs that simply define Severance as worthy death metal band for the masses. The record label/distributor handling the release is Goregiastic Records out of New York. Severance has also included a video at the end of the cd of the song "Consumed". Starting with the cd package itself, it is what we would expect from a band that is on a label. Cool artwork, with an 8 panel cd booklet with lyrics of the songs, band member photos and a thank you list are contained inside. (Speaking of which - this type of packaging is becoming the par here in the valley; damn, we've come along way from the burnt cd, labeled with the mark alot.) Getting pass the packaging, we get to a very well recorded cd. Ernie B of (Swig and The Sound Playground) can be credited for the excellent quality of the recording.

The cd opens with the overweigth song "Rejuevna-Dead". Alot of chug chug chug, heavy palm mute riffing here as in alot of Severance's songs. I must say that the fucking bass drums sound like a fucking machine gun! Damn, if Perez would have been in Vietnam, maybe we would have won. The sound is followed by "Consumed", which is one of my favorites off the cd, probably cause I've heard it more then the others. This song has a video at the end of the cd, which highlights 15, now 16 years of Severance's existence. The songs continue, on to another favorite, is "The Cleansing" which starts with a bass intro. This is one of the songs off the cd that includes the "Back-Up Death Choir". If anyone remembers the "Excorcist", just think of 1000s Megans when she is possessed and you can get an idea of what the "Back-Up Death Choir", sounds like. Throughout the cd, the guitar sound and riffing are extremely heavy, until we get to track "06 = Suffering (interlude)". This is a acoustic track with the guitar effect panning left to right. In the background, is a voice that sounds like me backwards, throwing up after a cheap beer induced hangover. Thats "The Suffering" to me. Moving on to track 9, comes "La Promesa". Its cool that the band stays in touch with their Mexican heritage. Perez, being the primary lyric writer of the band, touches base on some the traditions of the Catholic religion here. This one is quickly becoming my favorite off the cd. There is several grind parts in between the triplet heavy riffing. I think Severance has found out that the quest for speed can equally be balanced with structured heavy riffing. It definately shows on this song. Track 10 is The Pentagram cover "Fatal Predictions". I won't elaborate much on this one, since its a cover, but I will say that the band does an excellent job covering it. Track 11, the " Hatred Within", begins, and as we near the end of the cd, I've come to realize that the band could not have done a better job at accenting the staples of their sound by all the perfectly excecuted stops and gos of their songs. This is another song that has the "Backup Death Choir" here. At the end of the song is a guitar solo. Did I hear alittle blues in that lick? Damn, Severance's is showing alittle soul here. Severance ends the cd with an outro acoustic song, "Inhumanity" which is backed by a cello instrument.

In conclusion; the verdict = Severance went all out on this one. Its all here. The excellent packaging, artwork, recording, producing, included video, lyrics, photos, and a long ass thank you list by each member. Did I mention Severance showing soul earlier? Maybe not alittle soul; I would say alot of soul. As for a rating; I'm staying away from ratings now. Lets just say it has the Lunatic "must have", seal of approval. !!!

DTD - Demo 2006 = Review by Netz :There are a couple of types of bands out there. I wouldn't dare try to list them all but here goes with a couple. First, there are the ones who play a few shows and gain some recognition and are happy never aspiring to do anything more (Record a Demo, play out of the area, publish a web site, tees and cd's you get the picture). Second you have the bands that take it a bit more serious. This type of band dedicates time and effort into creating art, making it more than just a party every weekend at a different venue. Some of these bands actually do this SOBER! 4 REAL dudes! They have a slick websites and cool tee's that your grandmother would sport to Sunday brunch. They have a demo or a full album, stickers buttons a fan email list and plenty more. Let’s forget about the first type of band and talk a bit more about this second type. I will break it down even further for you... Something is missing with some of the bands in the second category. The ones with the myspace site and no domain, the ones that don't have any recorded media? The ones who have poor recording or little or no art work. Etc the point is HOW SERIOUS CAN YOU EXPECT ANYONE TO TAKE YOU IF YOU DONT TAKE IT SERIOUS YOURSELF. Save your money and do it right the first time. A great example of a band that takes there art seriously is DTD. Just take a look at there new album TODAY IS OURS. It has a bar code on the plastic wrap and on back insert (easy to pick out of a stack of cd's when your name is on the side) Very professional. The plastic is high grade and they have a trifold insert with lyrics and band info. The band and song names come up in media player so they paid the extra $25 bucks to get it listed proper. I love it. These guys have a killer instinct. DTD went the extra mile and it shows. They recorded and mixed at MP Recordings. MP Recordings is the best place to record drums period. I was over there the other day and counted 11 mics on the drum kit alone. They mastered at Crystal Clear Sounds. Now as for the music they kick ass (what would you expect with such a great package). Tiger uppercut (The Price Fighter) is a hard hitting song with a catchy opening riff. A good mix of thrashing and kick your ass put you 6 feet under lyrics make this my favorite track on the CD. This song is followed by Stronghold. Stronghold is a quick 1:36 song and I can see how this has the potential for an extended live performance with crowd participation (I will live my life I will hold my own WITH OUT YOU! WITH OUT YOU!) Picture Frame Regret also has an easy to sing along chorus. DTD did a good job on this track. It’s about a broken heart. I can feel the anger and hatred in the guitars and vocals. The next track I won’t fall victim is a bit longer at 3:07. This song is about substance abuse or rather not falling victim to drugs and trendy glamour. Today is Ours is a great song to name a CD after. Choppy guitar riffs lock up with the drums on this track and create a powerful groove. For the Burning Hearts has a slower softer beginning and middle. This song shows these guys versatility. The track is a short 2:52. A good song the fans will love to sing along to with a catchy chorus and killer guitar work. A dream of better days is 2:58 long. Good guitar work and heavy drums make this my second favorite track. About people talking shit behind your back and going against all odds and accomplishing your dreams. Of What Remains is a guttural Hate song about trendy glamour and a death wish. It comes in short of three minutes at 2:54. The next track is Lied and Deceived, a dark and inspired track. Another one of my favorites its 3:17 long. The lyrics on the song are by far the best. They tell a story of trust and betrayal, a look inside the eyes into the soul of insanity. Did I say awesome lyrics already? Once and Forever also has some meaningful lyrics and is an introspective about someone overcoming obstacles Once and Forever. Very heavy guitar and drum work on this song. It has a dynamic quality to it that makes it roll off your ears and seems longer than 2:43. The last track on this CD is The Street That Leads to the Cemetery. kick ass and clean this track is a good choice for an ending track. This song is about loosing a good friend and it hauntingly leaves you wanting more. Overall this CD is a top rate in my book and I recommend buying a couple as stocking stuffers. As for the negative, I can't say much other than image isn't everything. At first I thought where are all the pictures? Where are the shameless narcissistic pictures of the band and the groupies? NONE HMMM I wonder why? After listening to the CD I realized DTD may have left out images as a statement. A statement saying it's all about the music. I still think that image sells CD's if you've never heard or don't know about a band so I would recommend at least one picture of the band. That’s all for now and peace out... NETZ.

In Asunder - In Asunder (self titled cd) Review by A. Lunatic : Hailing from our very hometown of Weslaco, Tx, In Asunder has entered our local scene with a very distinct background. These group of musicians have each been scattered throughout our local valley music scene, previously playing with other bands ; hence the name which is derived from the meaning, in pieces. Former members of Dirt, Azazel, Divinity, & some current members of Severance & Absurdum, make up this five piece. Recorded in the Summer of 2005, and released in September of 2005, In Asunder has produced a 13 song full length cd that cover just over an hours worth of brutality heavy, yet melodic music. Taking elements mostly from thrash metal, but will probably labeled black/death metal due to the guttural style vocals, In Asunder has taken on a new sound that most valley bands have chosen to ignore. I was given this demo, by one of the guitarist of the band. He informed me that the demo was shopped around with a cover, but this was just a burnt copy. I won't comment on the cover since there is none given. To start with, I must say that the recording quality of the cd is very good. The only flaw recording wise, would be that the band did not master the cd; hence some songs are louder than others. Ofcourse, the levels of the recordings are decent on the cd, but alittle more compression, and level matching of all songs would bring this cd to an untouchable state. As for the music; it is well composed. Guitar melodies are predominant in this cd, with alot of 2 part harmonies involving 2 channel guitars, (also known as panning of guitars.) The keyboards are a nice touch, adding melodies to some songs while sometimes remaining in the background for added depth.. Not all songs have keyboards though as the band did a great job deciding on which songs should have them and which shouldn't.. The drumming here is very good. Some of the beats this drummer chooses to play to back a riff up, are non traditional, which is good in the sense that he is breaking away from predictability. Good stops and good transitions from acoustic pieces to distortion. The bass here adds a good foundation, however I wouldn't say that it shines as much as the guitars and drumming do. The lead vocals are straight up guttural. At times, the band kinda reminds me of a local Cradle of Filth . All in all, their demo is definately worth a listen. The sound the band captures is definately something you don't run across to everyday. The songs on the cd are as follows: 1.Intro/Obfleshion 2.Judgement Day 3.Murder 1 4.Despair 5.Impaler 6.As The World Burns... 7.Cruci-FICTION 8.Insanity 9.Highway 666 10.Scar Riddled Flesh 11.Everlasting Sorrow (2004) 12.(secret track) Beyond Death . Go check out track #4 in our mp3 section. Rating 9 out of 10. * since the posting of this review, In Asunder has re-released this cd with a professional duplication and package as well as mastering. Look for it at your local show.

Axe of Vengeance - Radiation Overload. Review by A. Lunatic : This is the fourth installment of Axe of V. They have released 4 demos since the band was created in 1999. This is a four song demo from this Harlingen foursome, which consists of your basic setup = one bassist, one guitarist, one singer, and one drummer. For those of you who don't know it, Axe of Vengeance is a Death Metal band. For right now, I eleborate on the music before the packaging. Recording quality is pretty decent. For one, the guitar sounds brutal, without the super treble, "fried guitar sound", that alot of death metal guitarist seem to fall victim too. There is alot of outstanding musicianship here. Omega Doomed, (track that was chosen for the Chaos Down South cd), starts of the cd, with some acoustic guitar and a movie sample. This song seems to be about a futurist scenario, of machine taking over man. Excellent heavy riffing and druming throughout. The bass is right there, following the guitar, note, to brutal note. The second song offers more of a variety, as Axe of Vengence, slows down in the middle of the song. Elegant Ravenous Death definately shows the versatility of what Axe of V can display as a band. Definately separates them from other death metal bands. Only one, thing I will complain about, is the lack of any bass soloing during the slow parts. There is space, where the band allowed the bassist to do something, but he opted instead to play it safe and just stick to the bass lines. I can understand not wanting to be too flashy, but the slow parts should be the bassists time to shine since the guitarist and drummer do alot of that here, throughout the whole cd. The last two songs of the cd, Venemous Annihilation of Sin and Shadow Priest, is some heavy, straight forward death metal. Another thing I admire about this band is the subjects the band likes to write about. While other death metal bands scream hate, and kill; A of V , writes about the pediophile priests, sucide bombers and the taking over of machines/computers. This is just another one of the many aspects that separates them from other death metal bands. I will go as far as to say, that this is ,if not the best death metal band in the valley, one of the top 3. The music here is very well written, and definately deserves more attention than what this band has been getting. Live, the band is quite impressive, however, with the doubling of guitars and the controled enviroment a recorded cd has to offer; this band will probably caught more peoples attention through recorded material then live shows. This leads me to the subject of packaging - the cdr has no label and was wrapped with a paper containing the lyrics and somewhat of a folded cover. Being that the music is exceptional, the band should'nt settle for anything other than a profesionally duplicated cd and cover. It would help the band so much more, carry their message and brutalnest across. After all, the music deserves it. Rating 9 out of 10.

MagaXzine/Simon Sez II = S.TEX Cd Compilation Vol. I-This is the first of many RGV compilations to come. Initially this cd was The Weird CD compilation, but a spawning off of Ramsey to his own Magazine, "MagaXzine" and the cd was released as a Simon Sez II/MagaXzine Cd compilation. This cd contains 14 songs from 14 bands of various genres. Usually, I would just highlight the songs from the CD that really stood out, but since this is 14 different bands, I will review, each and every song. Before I begin though, I have to say that most of the bands on the cd, fall under the mainstream/alternative rock genre. As in all cds - some songs outshine some of the others. Let us begin.

Tragic Komic-Never Look Back*#:
This song is a good start for a cd opener. The song right away captures the attention of the listener. If you have heard other Tragic Komic songs, this by far and hands down, is the heaviest material they have to date. Since this song was already reviewed by (El Guapo), see below, I won't elaborate much on it. I will say this though of the song; this song is definately one of thoses songs that outshine. Excellent mix.
The December Driver-None of the Above:
Ok. Now we are headed to the alternative genre area that I mentioned above. The song opens with some reverb driven vocals. I would say that this band definately has a distinct sound that sets them apart from many valley bands. Originality, rides high here; (or this could be just me saying that, cause I don't listen to much of this type of music), but this song definately has some good structured songwriting as well as good, tempo and riff changes. I would say that this band has that "college band" type of sound. Not my cup of tea, but I wouldn't say it sucks. Still, I'd give another song of theirs a listen. This one just didn't caught my attention that much.
Methmare Motorcade-Son of Man #:
If you look at our mp3 section, this is one of those songs that is available for a download. On the description, its mentioned as: music forever evolving. This song is a good example of such words. From start to finish, this song has dynamics all over the mutherfucker. Melody is predominant throughout the song, as the words touch bases on none other then the "Man" himself- Jesus Christ. You can tell that these guys are definately, movie and book loving individuals. All in all, this is another one of those songs that outshines, with musicianship riding high on this one. One last thing - If I had to categorize this, I would categorize this song in the alternative metal section.
DeadEnd Cadets-Pepper Disconnected:
Entering the fourth song of the compilation, led into a bit of punk/alternative song. The voice, definately falls more towards the punk side of things. This is a pretty decent song with parts that rock out, off and on. Production is good as well.
Dignan-Stop & Go:
As we head off the fifth song - we start to get the idea here, that most of these bands are catering to the mainstream/alternative crowd. This song has one of those happy fun catchy riffs, that is predominant throughout the song. Good musicianship.
Tracey's Mend-Last Sunday #:
Now out of all the mainstream songs here, this song stuck out the most. It starts with a folk rock type of strumming guitar, under some very good sounding lead vocals. The vocals are definately mainstream, big rock, sounding material. Good production, good melodies, good lead guitar, cool bass parts...etc. The only thing bad to say, is that the bass sounds alittle off time in the beginning of the song. Other than that, this is a great band that really rocks with this catchy tune. This leads me to say that if you are gonna be a mainstream band; write mainstream material that is gonna be catchy and don't settle for anything less. Saying this we begin our review of the next song.
Jamie Garcia-Sugar Coated Wings:
Good voice and great sound on the acoustic guitar. Before I forget to mention, this is an all acoustic song. The vocals here are doubled layered with "segundos" for the most part of the song. I don't understand what this guy is trying to get too. If its the mainstream he is trying to reach out, then I'd say he has to write a more memorable, catchy song. If he is going for the more "Alice In Chains" kind of thing; well then he has to be more haunting. Just not enough substance here to elaborate. I wouldn't put it pass Mr. Garcia to come up with a great song; he definately shows he has the talent, just not the song.
Driving the Nails-Days of Mourning:
Hard rock/alternative side of things start to come to play here. This band has really changed sound since the last time I heard them. I remember the last time hearing them, they had a more attention grabbing sound. Here we have, an average sounding song, that I would say, needs more substance. It really doesn't stand out as much as I've heard about this band. Maybe another song would change my outlook.
Driver XXIII-Changing Life #:
When I first heard this band live, I felt the singer was lacking in musicianship as compared to the rest of the band. It seems as though he does better here, on this recording. Throughout this review, I go off and on about how some songs stand out, or outshine the others. This is one of those songs that stands out. Great originality, great songwriting and great musicianship. This guy, (Danny) can rip live on guitar; although the solo he does on this song is not as flashy. Definately one of those bands that can lead the valley into some national recognition.
Abyss-Lamentations (Live)*:
Finally, we get away from the mainstream. Here enters Abyss. This is a Live take of "Lamentations" that was recorded at the Villarreal in McAllen, when Abyss was opening up for a national act. Adam, the singer, does a great job getting the crowd rowdy'd up, just before the song breaks open. ALot of heavy riffing here; enough to leave your scrotum draggin in the dirt. Abyss uses alot of open string E riffing (but they tune to Db or C I think), so you can imagine how heavy it sounds. I respect a band that is just as brutal as a death metal band, but is not death metal. You see, death metal was once underground; but now it seems like every kid in high school with a guitar wants to start a death metal band. Not that I don't like death metal bands, cause I love the music; Its just they are a dime a dozen now in the RGV scene. When all you worry about is being the fastest and the most cookie monster sounding band in the valley, you lose the art that was once music. Enough about that; this song kicks ass. Harmonics inbetween heavy riffing, bad ass drum rolls, and alittle bit of panning of the guitars in the end of the song, and a great mix makes this song well worth the listen. .......
Absentia-Butterfly Eggs:
This has a beautiful, relaxing beginning, with the guitar using abit of delay, back up by some keys. The open high hat sounds abit too loud, while the bass drum is too low on the mix, but other than that the rest of the mix is good. A good variety of changes makes this song pretty interesting. Good voice, great guitar playing, and good foundation layed down by the drums and bass. Although this song falls under the alternative genre, I seemed to pick up quicker on this song than most of the others in the same genre..
Rozin-Ordinary Man*:
Yup, straight up heavy rock. Good stops and dynamics. This is a pretty good mix. Rozin gets pretty heavy in this song as compared to some of their other songs. Good job on the song guys. It definately rocks.
Slow Grind-Legion of Shadows*#:
This song starts off with some evil sound acoustic guitar with the bass guitar doing some what of a cool sounding lead. Memo, singer, is singing abit different on this one, using more of his natural voice then trying to growl. The most impressive thing about this track is definately the drums. There is so many killer drum rolls, double bass and cymbal work on this song, that you would think John's arms,(the drummer) could fly off any minute. At the mid point, the song goes into a interlude, and Memo makes this, sound with his voice as if he is taking a massive shit. It sounds fucking cool. While this track is a fast fucking song; the band does a hell of a job keeping it interesting. This is what death metal should be all about. Keeping it interesting by adding various elements and styles. This is probably my favorite track off the whole cd.
All in all, this cd is a must for any true valley music scene follower. This is the first, I believe of many to come, so it was cool of Ramsey to push the envelope and come out with the 1st one. Another cool thing is that several local radio stations are giving out this cd as prizes, so that should enlighten some valley people that are in the dark about our scene. Vol. II should be out sometime early next year, so bands, pick up a copy of MagaXzine and look for the deadline for submissions. note: * = songs which don't fall under the alternative genre. # = my personal favorite tracks off the cd. SHOW REVIEWS

Intro

I decide to do this show recap alittle different this time. Instead of having it on the forums, we are gonna keep it here under the reviews section, since it was such a hell of a show.. no pun intended. Now, for those of you that never heard about this show, let me explain abit about it.
How it came to be.
Alittle over a year ago, Omar and I (Alex Lunatic), were having a beer at Nicki Rowe VFW, when I told Omar " We should do a show together, Beavis!". Omar was like, " Well ya, but what kind of show? , A battle of the bands? or mixed genre show?". Thats when it came to us that us being promoters of 2 different genres, would make a good theme for a kind of just for fun, "Punk vs. Metal" show. So soon after, the thought became more then just a beer drinking suggestion, and into reality. The first annual P vs M , occurred on Aug 20, 2005 and let me say that, that show was off the hook. We had such a blast during that show, that we thought, that we had to do it again. So this review is about this years = the 2nd annual P vs M. Things were alittle different this year. For starters, only 3 trophies were ordered this time, so there had to be a clear winner. It was a line that was soon divided once the show started. Let us begin.
Rules of Engagement
A coin toss between one band member of Dreadscape and one member of HellTown Rebels would decide the order in which the bands would play for the night. The best 2 out of 3 would win the decision. Coin was thrown up in the air, and HellTowns called it "Tails" - boom.........it was heads. Coin was thrown again in the air and Dreadscape called it "Heads" - boom........it was heads. No need for the 3rd coin toss since Dreadscape had won the first 2; so the metalside selected that the punk side go first.....The stage was set - the first band to play would be "HellTown Rebels", to represent the punk side followed by Horny Frog to represent the metal side. This sequence of a Punk band followed by a Metal band would be the sequence for the rest of the night.
A Penny for your thoughts
Now, once again, this year's show had to be different then last years. We needed to decide on how to judge 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. In another one of my drunkend stupors, I had come up with an idea to mark a shit load of pennies and give them out to each of the people attending the show. There was 6 cups with each cup having a different bands name on it = HellTown Rebels, DTD, Walk the Graves, DreadScape, Horny Frog, and Lay in Ruins. The people would vote by placing their penny in the cup of the band they elected to win. Knowing that people would throw in pennies that were not marked; the end vote counting, would only consider the pennies marked in each cup - And Yes - in the end, there was alot of unmarked pennies!!!!
Lets get it on!!!!
Before I forget - we raffled a guitar out for this show. It was a Ltd Viper 100FM, so right before HellTown took stage, people began to line up to buy tickets. I mention this, cause later on during the night, some events occurred that would bring us back to the guitar subject. Nonetheless - Lets begin the show review.
Helltown Rebels
Things looked good for this band, even before the band started to play, they were racking up major pennies!!!!! Once they took stage, we found out what the hype was about. Damn - with a sound that is straight up, beer guzziling music, I found myself chugging several plastic cups of beer almost seaminglessly. This is a great punk, rock n roll sounding band, that would definately go great at anyones B-day backyard bash.... The crowd responded with a whole bunch of moshing and singing along. This was by far a great opener. Kinda of reminded me of the response Solarium got last year when they opened up as well.
Horny Frog
Being that this band is from Reynosa, MX, its not just everyday that you can bring your following over with you, to cross the border. Its not like everyone in Mexico can cross the border - (I mean legally, cause illegally is by far another thing.) What this band suffered in intial crowd response, they made up with exceptional preformance. The crowd was quick to pick up that the talent this band has, far exceeds the average. With great dynamics, stops and piercing vocals, that screamed for vengenance, Horny Frog quickly moved threw their set. The crowd responded by the nodding of many heads. Before their set was over, the guitarist, did some amazing appregios and sweeps that were simply a fucking awesome display of talent. The bassist responded with his part by slapping his bass as if it were a bitch in heat!!!!! Very awesome band, that mixed heavy riffing , with cool slower parts, and ending with strong upbeats. There we had it. The 2 openers for the night, and the people began to pack in.
Walk the Graves
Coming back from a short tour, WTG was finally on home turf. They quickly settled in, to hit the stage. By this time, a good number of people were already inside the VFW, and crowding around the center. With Chris quickly saying "Lets get ready to do this shit", the mosh pit broke out in full fury as WTG began their onslaught of scrotum draggin hardcore. It did'nt seem to amaze me, cause, I expected this out of this band. In fact, I had said it before, that this was the punk sides strongest link, if you are to consider them punk. But enough of that - they were on the punk side bill and there was no stopping the energy people were feeding off of this band. I mean, the crowd was so intense, that the band barely had enough space to move themselves. Thank God for Omars, wireless mics, cause they sure came in handy during this set. Pure brutalness, pure adrenaline. Thats WTG.
DreadScape
Well, the pennies kept piling inside the 6 different cups and we were already half way through the night. Along came DreadScape to fill in the vacant spot off of the metal side in the last minute. Thank God, cause they saved my ass. What can you say about DS? Strong heavy riffing, fierced pounding drums, and low thumping bass were being tunneled into sweaty awaiting ear canals. This is metal all the way baby. No inbetween genres here. With stops being accented by a sharp pounding bass and drums, the energy would only pause momentarily before the band would speed away into thrashing assault. Great mosh pit here as well. It was great to see both supporters of punk and metal inside the same pit. What does that tell you about the band? They go well playing along with just about any band.
DTD
Whether you know them as Discard the Dead, Determined to Defeat or just DTD; the band hit the stage as we were coming down hill in time and crowd. Still, the band managed to get the mosh pit started again even though we were nearing the end of the punk side show of bands. Here again, the crowd sang along to some songs. What was pretty funny, was that people were trying to crowd surf during some of these bands sets. It was insane, to see that in such a small place. People were lending a hand to carry people in the air. I mean, its not like its even close to the size of La Villarreal. What is pretty cool about DTD, is that this is one of the few bands that goes all out. Not only in their live show, but in merchandise and cd packaging. They had stickers, patches, shirts for sale. Before I forget to mention, the band's cd is a par above the rest having excellent sound and professional cd packaging. If you don't know who DTD - go and find out...
Lay in Ruins
Here it was. The last band for the night. As the band was setting up, we found out that some Son of a motherless goat, had swiped one of the guitarist's guitars from the band. Now thats just fucked up. I mean, we are seeing this happen more and more. I mean, in reality, the person stealing a guitar from a band has to be a junkie, cause if he is serious about playing, the only safe place he'd be able to play it without noone recognizing it, would be at home. Well enough about that. One of the other bands guitarist, was kind enough to lend out their guitar and the band went on to kick some ass. This was the last band yet there was still alot of moshing going on. The pit was in full force, when some other son of a motherless goat, took it too far and began to throw intentional punches. That didn't last too long. After getting some swift ass kicking on the floor, Netz along with the security guard, kicked the kids butt out. Lay in Ruins ended the set strong, and my hats off to them for doing the gig despite the shitty circumstances.
The coming of the end
The six cups were taken aside as Omar and Virginia began the count. I didn't really want to look. Damn... So , before announcing the votes, we decided , it was time for the guitar raffle. Netz, had asked for assistance from a lady in the audience to pick the winning ticket. The first ticket picked was announced =744001. Everyone looked around but no sign of the winner. Again it was announced = 744001......and people continued to look around, but there was no sign of the winner. Maybe he was taking a shit? Maybe, he was the guy that was kicked out? Maybe he was deaf? Maybe he was too fucked up and drunk to pay attention? Well, what ever the case would be, we called it = Going once - Going twice - Going - GONE !!!! The ticket was torn up and the helping hand, picked another one. So we announced = 744048. 744048..........BOOM - A winner !!!!!! It just so happened that the other guitarist of Lay in Ruins (the other one that didn't get his guitar stolen) had won the guitar. Everyone was amazed in awwww. Before doing anything else, the winner walked over and gave the guitar to the other guitarist. DAMN !!!! Talk about some love there !!!!! That was too fucking cool for my bones. I mean, I don't even want to share a beer when I'm drunk !!!! Anyway - it couldn't have happened any better. I'm glad it turned out the way it did. As for the votes, the trophy, the money, the glory = 1st place was HellTown Rebels, 2nd was Walk the Graves, 3rd was DTD and Punk took it be a landslide. Hmmmmm..... I wish it was the metal side taking it but thats ok - we'll wait till next year. Ya - Omar, you're right = you can brag all you want this year - be don't be too sure next year. We are gonna be there in full force next time!!!!!!!! Thanks to all that showed up!!!! See you next year!! IT was super fun!!!! Thanks to all for making this show such a success for 2 years in a row!!!!!
Which way did he go?
Well. Afterwards - the Lunatic crew was too drunk to go to any after party, so we decided to hit the local Whataburger. As we sat down and recieved our food we tried to sober up as much as we could. Gabriel, still in abit of a drunken state then reached in his pocket and took out his ticket he had boughten for the guitar raffle. He asked Netz," Hey, I had ticket #744001. Who won the guitar anyway?". DAMN !!!!!! You know, somethings, happen for a reason. Gabriel - stay drunk - your cool like that.....the end.

MagXzine Cd Compilation CD Release Show: Review by Alex Lunatic (Well sort of.):- This show was a sucess as far as I can say. There was a pretty decent turnout. About 5 bands off the cd, were able to play this show. The sad thing here is , I was too drunk to remember the whole show, so instead of a review of the show; please refer to the pictures we took which are linked-here.....

MP3 REVIEWS

Sworn - "Advent Suffering" off the 2007 EP Cd. Song available at our MP3 section.
Play Hi Fi here.
Play Lo Fi here.
Review by Alex Lunatic:
Spawning off from "Of Forsaken Divinity", into side project "Sworn" , Legion takes us into another realm of what the black metal world has to offer. The second track off this 7 track cd, "Advent Suffering" demonstrates a lucious world full of demon trance, haunting chants, electronica driven guitars, topped with ecstacy fueled drums beats. Definately not for the weak at heart - but for the love of a darkened soul. More info on the cd and Sworn available @ www.myspace.com/fucksworn.

Horny Frogs - Get Me Out off the 2003-2004 Horny Frog Demo. Song available at our MP3 section. Review by Robert (BobCat) Lopez: I'M VERY PARTIAL TO RELATIONSHIP SONGS, "GET ME OUT" BY HORNY FROG, IS A GOOD EXAMPLE OF A WELL WRITEN RELATIONSHIP SONG. SONG WRITING AND MUSICIANSHIP ARE DEFINATELY WORKING TOGETHER ON THIS TRACK. THIS SONG IS UPBEAT AND HAS GREAT MELODY PARTS THAT DONT TAKE AWAY FROM THE HEAVYNESS AND THE TONE OF THE SONG. VOCALLY I'D HAVE TO SAY THAT I HEAR A CERTAIN TOUCH OF 311,POD OR PAPA ROACH. TO SUM THIS ALL UP QUICKLY I PRETTY MUCH CAN JAM THE HELL OUT TO THIS SONG. HAT'S OFF BOYS.....

Tragic Komic - Never Look Back. Song available at our MP3 section. Review by T.(El Guapo) S. : Very appealing song, the opening riff underlying the verse, is very original. Simple but effective. The drums give the song a heavy stance, along with the Sevendust-like chorus. The lead guitar portion of the song is just enough to leave a little to the imagination of things to come in what appears to be a work in progress,(an excellent work in progress nonetheless). Recording quality is excellent. The vocal work is very in tune to what the scene is doing right now on the bigger stage. The ladder part of the song in which the bass guitar showcases the melodic side of Tragic Komic, (bass harmonics), adds a different flavor to an already well written, well composed song. An overall rating of 9 out of 10 with only the bass guitar almost being overlooked, until the last portion of the song...El Guapo.

Weaken the Adversary - Ashes of Dawn . Song available at our MP3 section. Review by A. Lunatic : Taken from the Burn me Alive cd, Ashes of Dawn deals with topic of Vampire love. I thinks thats pretty cool to write about since I've never seen it done before. When it comes to the music; I have to stop and say "DAMN". "Where are these MFs, out of?". Well I'm proud to say that these boys hail out of our great State of Texas. To be more exact, they hail from the greater, Dallas/Ft.Worth area. The song starts out semi fast, as when the singing comes in, the band switches to a "Kill Switch Engage", type of verse. The songs main riff is pretty moshy; kinda of reminded me of the old glory days of thrash. The guitar work on this track is phenonmenal. Excellent fucking solos. They use alot great guitar harmonies, while managing to still keep the music brutal. Production is excellent. All in all, this is thrash music at its finest. These guys really impressed the hell out of me. I'll be reviewing the whole cd, so we'll get to the nitty gritty about the band, but for now, I give this song a rating of 9 1/2 out of 10. Yup, its that good....

Texas Pride - Never Want To See You Go. Song available at our MP3 section. Review by A. Lunatic : There is so much to say about this band, but where to start. First of all, the talent here is abundant. The story starts, with a 4 piece band from Weslaco, Tx, rehearsing in the garage. Now, in those days (late 70s, early 80s), the RGV was not quite ready for live bands, so even playing covers, it was hard for a band to get a gig, to get out of the garage. One day, a local promoter came and saw the band practice and was really impressed. When he asked for their name, the band looked around the old garage, and saw all the empty cans of "TEXAS PRIDE beer" and replied "TEXAS PRIDE!". Soon enough, the band was in negotiations with singer "Toby Bow", from Donna, Tx. Toby, had already had a top 10 single, "Angel Baby", on the Billboard charts, nationwide and was looking for a band to back him up. Tragedy stuck before anything came to be. Singer/Bassist, Mike Anzaldua, was murdered in a dometic dispute, thus ended the future of the band. Still, guitarist, Juan Garcia, went on and became Trish Yearwood's guitarist, also later becoming Garth Brooks guitarist as well. This is the only known recording of the band. If you are into classic rock, hold on for a fucking ride. This song rocks excellently. Keep in mind, that the recording is very old, (early 80s), so there is alittle bit of compilcations in reformating this to a digital format. Nonetheless, Lunatic has managed to rip this muther and add it to our Lunatic vault of mp3s. Rating 9 out if 10.... Could quite possibly be a 10, but the music (converted from a stretched cassette tape to mp3 format) is hard to make at times.

Of Blood & Ashes - Dying before Dying . Song available at our MP3 section. Review by A. Lunatic :Now before, we mentioned anything about the music - let me touch bases on how exactly this mp3 came to be. Now instead of feeling sorry, for themselves , for lack of recording equipment, or studio money; this band took it upon themselves to take matters in their own hands, to be heard. First, the took their computer; got on the internet; downloaded the free recording software (Audacity), available at the Lunatic Forums section, and began to record. Now this is the basic foundation of getting heard, cause if your not serious enough about your own music, don't expect someone else to be. Ok, enough about that. The song starts off with a struming acoustic riff that introduces the song as distortion comes to play, and the melody is accented by the second guitar doing melodies using octave bar sliding riffs. The song stops, and the verse riff starts. The verse riff is dominated by a triplet skipping riff, in between the melody. The band uses song structure, and riffs that are in the likes of todays metalcore giants, In Flames, Lamb of God, etc... Although the vocals stay in the death metal growl, guttaral, vain. The guitars are heavy and melodic as the song slows down in the middle, just enough to break into a groove type solo. The song ends with the main verse tripet riff, and I must say, for a first run of recording; the guys did a pretty decent job. A hell lot better, then recording straight into a mixing board. I think with time and persistance, this band can go somewhere. Rating 8.5 out of 10.

Saint Rose - Danza dela Muerte. Song available at our MP3 section. Review by A. Davila :When I first heard this song, I thought it was a mistake. I could not believe Alex would put up something this elementary on the mp3 section. Later, I learned that he just wants to be fair and give everyone a chance to be heard out there. But I'll say this, if its up there for people to hear, then it must be there as well for people to give their criti', so heres mine. First, there is no tempo change in this song, which makes it kinda boring. Second, the guitar work here is primitive; my little bro plays more techincal than this. Third, if you can't sing in a high pitched 80s voice; just don't try it. To sum things up, I'd give this artist, one word of advice; "evolve", cause you are getting left behind. Here is my rating - 5 out of 10... and I'm being nice.... , <
