John Roche Spotted in Weslaco, TX

Midweek update. We have just updated the flyers section of the website for the rest of the month of June. It seems like this weekend the "27th", you will have 4 shows to choose from as well as a party. All flyers from those shows have been posted here on the flyer section. The private party will be Arno's Bday bash hosted by John Marc's party pad in Mcallen. More details on the chat box located to the left. Before I mention future shows, I'd like to inform you all that "John Roche" of the Mean Streets Part 3 was spotted this past weekend, riding a bike down Old Business 83. Seems like he is doing fine from what I could tell. He had all his supplies on back of his bike. We will be updating that section, "The Mean Streets", sometime in the very near future. Future prospects are of course "Mariano, the border taquache" and "Jose, the pimp with a limp." Now about the future shows. Sophies Double S Ranch Show! August 1st has Death Scum Records hosting a local show at Sophies Double S Ranch, South 10th st, Mcallen, TX. Jason McMaster, formerly of the tech thrash band, "WatchTower" and 80's hair band "Dangerous Toys", will be performing with his new band "Broken Teeth". BT along with 4 other bands will be the lineup for the Aug. 1st show. A second show with a similar lineup will be hosted the day after at Smoking Aces in Mission, TX, Aug. 02, 2009. Flyer of that show will be posted on the next update. Also, we hope to finalize the "{A Day in the Park}" show in mid July. We will have details very soon. We will be back this coming Sunday with a full update on things and so forth. Remember to keep it fucking brutal and extreme!!!!!.................LONG LIVE THE SOUTH TEXAS UNDERGROUND !!

Who We Are

The 80's was an amazing time for music in my book. While metal bands like, Deep Purple, AC/DC, & Black Sabbath existed in the late 70's, it was next decade that can be credited for the metal music revolution. Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Twisted Sister, and Motley Crue became household names across America. Youths across the nation suddenly traded their members only jackets for denim and leather. Like with most fashion, most of the Rio Grande Valley (TX) youths were late to jump in. Hiding tapes and albums from their parents so one would escape scrutiny from all the satanic references was common practice amongst us valley kids in the 80s. There simply wasn't much of our people around. Inside the high school hallways we stuck out like a herpes cold canker on the lips. The few that were around were often labeled as outcasts or weird. This labeling deterred "the popular people and most importantly the girls" into not even remotely thinking of liking such monstrous music. We simply did'nt care to be popular; it was about the music! On a Saturday's midnight, KRIX 99.5 FM (The Valley's Rock n Roll Air force), would air the sounds of M-M-M-METALSHOP ! The early years of my teen youth were good but something was right around the corner. And then it happened; bands like Slayer, Metallica, Anthrax, Exodus, and Megadeth pushed the metal explosion to the next level. Suddenly there was even a more extreme music with metal music being its forefather. MTV jumped on the bandwagon and HEADBANGER'S BALL was reaching well over millions of viewers nationwide. Moshing became our form of dance and the world was simply in awe..

Fast forward 10 years to early 2000 and the world of the internet is relatively a new thing. Metal music has survived the "Grunge movement" but is still not as strong as it was in the 80s & 90s. Remnants’ of local metal/punk bands began to form once more but their internet presence is at zero. Trenton Point becomes the new home of the RGV's extreme music acts and the scene begins to become active once again. Red Barn Productions, and "The Union" begin to take an active stance in the local punk and metal scene with shows being hosted almost on a monthly basis. "The Union", a group of local punk musicians and supporters makes the first attempt of a local music scene internet presence, by establishing a forums board. The forums board is highly successful but mainly supports only punk and subgenres of.

In late 2001, early 2002, enraged.indiegroup.com and www.geocities.com/lunaticproductions2002 are created and thus become the first local internet site to actively promote local RGV metal bands. Shows host by Lunatic Productions and Smegma Entertainment begin to occur on a monthly basis. These ad filled sites become too small in bandwidth for hosting and in late 2003 Lunatic Productions moves to its own dot com domain name, free from ads. Now known as www.lunaticpro.com, Lunatic Productions continues to host monthly shows, to include collaborations with Red Barn Productions, The Collective and DDS Productions. Shows like "Summer Fest 2001 / 2004", "Freedom Fest 2003", "Rebirth of the Metal 2003" and "Punk vs. Metal 2005/2006/2007" establish the website as predominate supporter of local original music acts. In 2007, the website releases "Chaos Down South Vol I", a cd showcasing 25 different bands of various rock based genres from the South Texas area. The cd is sent out to over 20 A&R reps and college/internet radio stations across the country. The cd is sold out in 2008 and the website resorts to more a passive state the rest of the 2008 year.

Throughout the years, the website has developed not only to include music relate items but also articles about our own takes of life and South Texas culture. We have come to love our own little space on the internet and hope that the coming years bring our viewers and staff the most of our endeavors. Peace and long live the South Texas Underground !!!!!
